This reportage is taken from the legendary Los Angeles punk fanzine Slash (vol.3 n.5 - 1980). Compiled by Vale and Juno (of Search & Destroy / Re-search fame) it's a nice collection of obscure punk/wave names from the city of San Francisco.

The Lhasa Club, a small 100-person capacity club in Hollywood, was famous for providing an ecletic program. Jean-Pierre Boccara opened the club in 1982 and started to book punk/new wave band combined with performance artists, cabaret acts, comedians, poets and art-exhibition.  
"All forms would be possible. Whether it was modern dance or a punk band, that's fine, as long as it's entertaining and intelligent." said Boccara about the Lhasa.

In 1984 the Lhasa Club released a live-compilation called "The Lives of Lhasa" which included songs by The Fibonaccis, Pell Mell, Linda J. Albertano, Necropolis of Love, Food and Shelter, Les Toulose, Pink Mink, Michael Peppe, Henry Rollins.

Around 1985, Boccara began to film the performances with the idea to realize a video with 100 performances. He didn't succeed, but thirty years later he released them on internet as "The Lhasa Club Tapes" (with Tomata DuPlenty, Henry Rollins, Marina LaPalma..).

After some issues he had to close the Lhasa Club but re-opened in a bigger venue and change the name to Lhasaland. Later Boccara found the successful and exclusive Cafè Largo and Luna Park.

Situated in the Art District in the downtown of Los Angeles the Al's Bar was a pivotal venue for L.A. artsy punk during the early 80s and later for grunge in the 90s. Marc Kreisel, a visual artist, bought the Al's Bar in 1979. It was on the ground floor of the American Hotel, a residency for artists, musicians and weirdos and became famous for being raw  From 1982 to 1985 the Dustin Shuler’s installation “Pinned Butterfly” dominated the wall that sits at the streets of Hewitt and Traction, he nailed a Cessna 150 to it. It looks like they're doing a documentary about the American Hotel and Al's Bar, here's the website.

To feel the atmosphere around the art district I suggest you to check this movie: Young Turks by Stephen Seemayer. It includes footage, shooted between 1977 and 1981, among others the Al's Bar, the Party Boys and the performance duo Bob & Bob, it also featured M. Kreisler.

A dark punk fanzine runs by Jeff Dahl (Vox Pop, Angry Samoans). The first number is 15 pages and features an interview with Dinah Cancer (lead singer of 45 Grave and Castration Squad), articles about Omlits (sloppy punk band), Terminal Vermin (punk rock), Vox Pop and Nervous Gender (synthpunk).

The second number is more oriented towars hardrock and heavy metal with interviews and articles about Motorhead, Girlschool, 45 Grave, The Sins and others.

Another Room Magazine was an Oakland based fanzine, it emerged from punk and new wave scene but it focused mainly on experimental music, alternative comics and contemporary art. It was founded around 1978 by John Gullak, guitarist of the San Francisco punk wave band Mutants, Lucy Childs and Michael Mallery, who designed the fanzine using the first Apple Computers, he was a pioneer of the use of desktop publishing, quite a peculiar thing for a punk fanzine.
At the beginning the magazine was financed by selling to artists full pages for their art, so the first issues were only ads and artwork and when they gained extra money they started to put articles, interviews and reviews in it.
Around 1980 John Gullak begun to organize some environmental sound events called Public Hearing. They put a p.a. on the roof of their building to broadcast hours and hours of cassettes sent to them by the people through the magazine. It was a sort of show case for emerging independent music  people. From 1982 John Gullak hosted No Other Radio, a radio program on KPFA (Berkeley) focused on experimental and industrial music. Around the same time, together with Jeff Brogan, he founded the label A.R.P.H. Tapes (Another Room Public Hearings Tapes) and they released cassettes of XX Committee, Problemist, Debt of Nature and the Audio A.R.M. Cassette Magazine.
